Story
Abraham, originally named Abram, was called by God to leave his country and go to a land that God would show him. In obedience, he left everything and followed God by faith.
God made a covenant with Abraham, promising to make him the father of a great nation, to bless him, and to bless all nations through him. Though Abraham and Sarah were old and childless, he believed God's promise.
After many years, Isaac was born — the child of promise. Abraham's faith was tested when God asked him to sacrifice Isaac. He obeyed, trusting that God could even raise the dead. God provided a ram instead, reaffirming His covenant.
Though Abraham made mistakes — including lying and taking Hagar — his life ultimately reflected a deep trust in God's promises and character.
Spiritual Significance
- Called by God to leave his homeland and follow by faith
- Received the covenant promises of land, descendants, and blessing to all nations
- His faith was counted as righteousness and is used in the New Testament to illustrate justification by faith
Christ Connection
God promised Abraham that through his offspring all nations would be blessed. Jesus is that promised offspring — the fulfillment of the covenant and the one through whom salvation has come to all who believe.
