Story
Samuel was the long-awaited son of Hannah, who had prayed earnestly for a child and vowed to dedicate him to the Lord. Once he was weaned, she brought him to serve under Eli at Shiloh.
At a time when Israel’s spiritual leadership was corrupt and 'the word of the Lord was rare,' God called out to the young Samuel during the night.
Samuel did not recognize the voice of God at first — not because he wasn’t listening, but because, as 1 Samuel 3:7 notes, 'the word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him.' Even one of the greatest prophets had to learn to hear and recognize God’s voice through the revelation of His Word.
After Eli instructed him how to respond, Samuel said, 'Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.' From that moment, the Lord began to reveal Himself — and as 1 Samuel 3:21 explains, 'The Lord continued to appear at Shiloh, and there he revealed himself to Samuel through his word.'
Samuel became the vessel through whom God's Word returned to Israel, showing that true prophetic authority begins with knowing and responding to God’s revealed Word.
Spiritual Significance
- Samuel was dedicated to the Lord before birth and served in the tabernacle from a young age under Eli the priest.
- He heard God’s call as a boy — in a time when 'the word of the Lord was rare' — and became a faithful prophet who did not let a single word from God fall to the ground.
- He led Israel with integrity, combining the roles of judge, priest, and prophet, calling the people back to covenant faithfulness.
- Samuel anointed Saul as Israel’s first king and later, under God’s direction, anointed David, the man after God's own heart.
- He stood boldly for God's truth even when rebuking kings, and his intercession and leadership shaped the spiritual direction of Israel.
Christ Connection
Samuel served as prophet, priest, and judge — three roles that foreshadow the fullness of Christ’s office.
Just as Samuel spoke the Word of the Lord to Israel, Jesus is the Word made flesh who speaks to us perfectly.
Samuel anointed David, the king after God’s heart — pointing to Jesus, the ultimate King from David’s line, who reigns forever.
What We Can Learn
- Hearing God starts with humility — like Samuel, we must be ready to say, 'Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.'
- God often speaks through His Word — even in times of silence, He reveals Himself to those who seek Him through Scripture.
- Faithfulness in youth prepares us for leadership later. Samuel was faithful in small duties before carrying the weight of a nation.
- Spiritual leadership requires courage — Samuel confronted sin in the house of God and in the palace.
- God’s voice is not just heard — it is obeyed. Samuel’s legacy shows the power of listening and acting on God's Word.
