Story
In the days of the judges, when Israel was oppressed by King Jabin of Canaan and his general Sisera, God raised up Deborah as a judge and prophetess. She was known for her wisdom, and the people came to her for judgment under the Palm of Deborah.
Hearing from God, she summoned Barak and commanded him to gather an army to defeat Sisera, promising that the Lord would give them victory. Barak, however, was reluctant to go without her. Deborah agreed, but told him that the honor of the victory would go to a woman.
In the battle, the Lord routed Sisera’s army with a mighty storm, causing chaos among their iron chariots. Barak pursued the fleeing soldiers, but Sisera escaped on foot.
Sisera sought refuge in the tent of Jael, a woman who welcomed him in peace — only to later kill him with a tent peg while he slept, fulfilling Deborah’s prophecy.
Deborah and Barak then sang a song of praise to God (Judges 5), celebrating the victory and recounting the events. She is called 'a mother in Israel,' reflecting her nurturing leadership and fierce protection of God’s people.
Her courage and obedience during a spiritually dark time helped bring national restoration and peace for forty years.
