Grace

Freely given, never earned — God’s love poured out in abundance.

First Mention in Scripture

Original Word: חֵן (ḥēn) / χάρις (charis)

Reference: Genesis 6:8

Meaning: Favor, kindness, goodwill freely given; divine favor without regard to merit.

In the Old Testament, 'ḥēn' describes the favor Noah found with God. In the New Testament, 'charis' becomes central to describing the free gift of salvation through Christ.

Grace is God’s undeserved kindness toward us — His generous love and favor that we could never earn by our own efforts.

In Scripture, grace is not just a pleasant attitude from God, but His active work to rescue, forgive, and transform sinners.

From the beginning, salvation has been by grace. The law revealed our need; grace met that need through Jesus Christ.

Grace changes everything: it rescues us from condemnation, adopts us as children, and empowers us to live a new life.

What Grace Is — and What It’s Not

Grace is God’s choice to bless and save us, not because of our worthiness, but because of His own goodness and love.

It is not permission to sin, nor is it earned by performance. Grace is the unshakable foundation of our relationship with God.

Grace in the Old Testament

Even under the Law, God’s people were saved and sustained by His grace. Noah found favor (ḥēn) with God (Genesis 6:8), Abraham was chosen by promise, and Israel was delivered from Egypt before receiving the Law.

Grace was always the starting point of God’s covenant dealings.

Grace in Jesus Christ

Jesus is the full and final revelation of God’s grace. Through His life, death, and resurrection, He brought salvation as a gift — not wages we earn.

John writes, “From his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace” (John 1:16).

Living in Grace

Grace not only saves us but teaches us to live in a way that honors God (Titus 2:11–12).

We stand in grace, we grow by grace, and we will be kept by grace until the end. It is both the doorway into the Christian life and the power to walk it out.

Scripture References

Grace is the heartbeat of the gospel — God reaching down to bless, rescue, and transform those who could never save themselves. It humbles the proud, lifts the broken, and draws us into joyful, secure relationship with our Father. Grace is not a mere concept; it is the Person of Jesus Christ given to us.
