Second Coming

The Blessed Hope of the Church.

First Mention in Scripture

Original Word: παρουσία (parousia)

Reference: Matthew 24:3

Meaning: Coming, arrival, presence.

Used often in the New Testament for Christ’s return, especially in 1 Thessalonians 4–5 and 2 Thessalonians 2.

The Second Coming of Christ is one of the central promises of Scripture. Just as surely as He came the first time to die for sin, He will come again to bring salvation to His people and judgment to the world (Hebrews 9:28).

The first coming was in humility, as the suffering Servant. The second will be in glory, as the conquering King. Every eye will see Him, every knee will bow, and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord (Revelation 1:7; Philippians 2:10–11).

For believers, this is the 'blessed hope' (Titus 2:13) — the day of resurrection, reward, and eternal joy. For unbelievers, it will be the day of judgment. That is why Scripture calls us to watch, to live holy lives, and to long for His appearing.

The Promise of His Return

Jesus Himself promised: “I will come again and take you to Myself” (John 14:3). At His ascension, angels declared: “This same Jesus… will come back in the same way you have seen Him go into heaven” (Acts 1:11).

The return of Christ is not symbolic — it is a real, visible, bodily coming.

The Signs of His Coming

Jesus spoke of wars, famines, false prophets, lawlessness, persecution, and the gospel being preached to all nations before the end (Matthew 24:4–14).

These signs remind us that history is moving toward a climax — but the exact day and hour remain unknown (Matthew 24:36).

The Resurrection and Gathering of Believers

At His coming, the dead in Christ will rise first, and those still alive will be caught up with them to meet the Lord in the air (1 Thessalonians 4:16–17).

This is the hope of the resurrection: not disembodied souls, but glorified bodies, reunited with Christ forever (Philippians 3:20–21).

The Judgment of the Wicked

Christ’s coming will also bring judgment. “When the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels in flaming fire, He will inflict vengeance on those who do not know God” (2 Thessalonians 1:7–8).

Every hidden thing will be exposed (1 Corinthians 4:5). Those who rejected Christ will face eternal separation from Him (Matthew 25:41).

The Renewal of Creation

The Second Coming ushers in the new heavens and new earth. “Behold, I am making all things new” (Revelation 21:5).

The curse of sin will be gone, death will be no more, and God will dwell with His people forever (Revelation 21:3–4).

Living in Expectation

The Bible never gives the return of Christ as trivia to speculate over, but as truth to shape how we live. “Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness” (2 Peter 3:11).

We are called to be awake, faithful, and ready — living today in light of eternity (Matthew 24:42–44).

Scripture References

The Second Coming is the climax of history and the fulfillment of God’s promises. For the world, it will mean judgment. For the Church, it is the blessed hope. Christ will return, the dead will rise, justice will be done, and creation will be renewed. Until that day, we live in faith, holiness, and eager expectation: 'Come, Lord Jesus!' (Revelation 22:20).
